Mary was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Frank O’Bannon; Journalist of the Year by the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association; and a finalist for the Torchbearer Award by the Indiana Commission for Women. She was awarded the National Order of Women Legislators National Press Award and the Larry A. Conrad Renaissance Award by the Indianapolis Press Club, of which she served as president. She was inducted into the Northern Star Alumni Hall of Fame, which honors graduates of Northern Illinois University who worked at the school newspaper, The Northern Star, and went on to successful careers in journalism. She won several journalism awards, including Best Consumer Journalism from the National Press Club.
